Potential + Opportunity = Success

Presenting two secondary girls Miriam, and Prosperity.

Introducing Form 3 (Junior) students Miriam and Prosperity who consistently receive high academic results. Both are orphans. One lives with her elderly grandmother and attends a day school while the other has no family and attends a boarding school. Miriam wants to pursue a career in medicine while Prosperity expresses an interest in law.

Joseph continues his studies at the United States International University-Africa to earn a BA in International Relations, specializing in Development Studies with a minor in Public Relations.

Joseph was recently filmed in a ‘day in the life’ documentary video showing him as an International Olympic Committee Young - Leader and para-tae kwon do athlete. It followed his journey from feeling excluded from sports as a teenager due to his disability, to being scouted to para-tae kwon do at university and winning a bronze medal at the 5th African Para-tae kwon do Championships. His experience with sport has had such a positive impact on his life that he wants other students with disabilities to have the same opportunities that he has had. He is working with the government and other universities to make sport accessible to those with disabilities. As an IOC Young -Leader he will represent Kenya at the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris and hopes to compete in the Los Angeles Olympics in 2028.

Secondary School Students

Brian continues his studies in civil engineering in Nairobi. We recently purchased a new laptop for him that would accommodate his engineering requirements.

Janet will graduate next year with a degree in education and is looking forward to working with students to help them attain their potential.

WE Care International will continue supporting seven students moving to Form 4 (senior) and eight students advancing to Form 3 (junior).

In our title, CARE has special meaning...

Lewis and Antony

Lewis is making a slow recovery from his surgery for colo-rectal cancer and subsequent chemo treatment. He would certainly have died if we had not been able to provide for his medical needs. His grandmother died shortly after his surgery which means he and his two brothers now live alone. We have been helping with food assistance and have enrolled his younger brother, Antony, as a Form 1 (Freshman) student at Mahero Secondary School. Antony cried tears of joy as he received his school uniform because he thought he would never be able to continue in school.

WE Care recently repaired a hand pump at a well that was not in use, located between Mahero and the market village. It now serves as a hub for hundreds of local residents who formerly had to walk a long distance to fetch water for their homes and do laundry. With changing weather patterns there has been extensive flooding in this area of Kenya which makes providing sources of safe water even more important in order to avoid water borne illnesses such as cholera.

In Closing:

It is hard to believe that it’s been more than five years since I last visited Kenya, and at age 83, I’m procrastinating due to the strain of making a 36-hour trip. I depend on my good friend and coordinator in

Mahero

to maintain contact with students, schools, and interact with the community. While we are not undertaking new projects, I am determined to complete the commitment WE Care has made to current students and community improvement.
